Dave Itzkoff talks with director Zack Snyder about his upcoming Superman film:

What drew Mr. Snyder in as he first read the “Man of Steel” script (while Mr. Nolan and his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, waited in his driveway) was a vision of the character that felt both classical and contemporary. On the one hand, Mr. Snyder suggested that for Clark Kent to be fully fleshed out, not every moment in his maturation needed to be depicted.

“We assume that Clark is not a virgin — I do,” he said. ” You don’t see that, but that’s the assumption.”

I love the notion of Snyder telling his producer (and wife) and Christopher Nolan to “wait in the car” while he goes to read a script.

MG assumes Snyder told them to wait.

Close observers of Nolan know they sat there ready to perform wetwork if there was a sudden plot leak on the Internet. (Also- it was just Emma Thomas and Chris Nolan in the car, the confusion comes from the fact that Synder’s wife is his producing partner. Note to self: get a producer-wife.)

That’s one hell of a driveway moment.

DIGITAL DJING LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER – AND IT WORKS

Kate Stone has advanced some futuristic technology, turning simple construction paper into turntables that actually play music.

Youth Radio and Turnstyle had the honor of hosting this inventor who wants to change the way we think about electronics. It’s awe-inspiring to watch Stone’s as-yet-unnamed creation in action: you touch your simulated turntables on a piece of paper, and you’re controlling the DJ app on the iPad sitting five feet away from you. Every function that’s available on an analog turntable, including blending songs and scratching records, is also possible with Stone’s technology.

Besides just music, this technology has promise for other fields like education, where it could help meet literacy gaps.
Say a child is learning how to read, and he doesn’t understand a particular word. He could run his fingers over a sentence printed on Stone’s paper, hooked up to speakers,

and it could offer pronunciation help. Of course, there are some apps for the iPad and other tablets that can do this already. But when you think globally about needs in developing countries, this technology is much cheaper than buying iPads. - Kent Foster

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, known to fans as TheLBD, reframes Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride & Prejudice as an interconnected series of vlogs and social media accounts. The central YouTube account is LizzieBennet, and it was here less than a year ago that Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennet (Ashley Clements) began her video diary with the immortal first line:

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

Today TheLBD announced that the final episode would be episode 100, set to post on March 28th. The reaction on Tumblr was swift, as if a thousand thousand voices cried out at once at warp factor 9.

This coming Monday members of the show’s writing staff will be the guests of honor at the monthly Transmedia Los Angeles meeting, moderated by yours truly. Read more about the series and the event here.
